Don Giovanni

Essa intende porre termine all'isolamento culturale di Vienna, invitando artisti stranieri e facendo conoscere le proprie opere all'estero.

Expressionism

It is not a unitary movement, it is not unconditionally a reaction all'impresisonismo, for some  it is not even a movement.
In the end it came first in reference to the French Fauves, and only in 1910, used by the art dealer Paul Cassier to characterize the art of Pechestein as opposed to Impressionism. By 1914, partly because of the war, the groups that make the German espressinismo are already in crisis: Die Brucke, born in Dresden and moved to Berlin in 1910, disbanded in 1913 in Der Blaue Reiter Monzaco after death in the war of August Macke (1914) and Franz Marc (1916), ceases joint initiatives.
Expressionism has therefore its peak between 1905 and 1914, double the painterly expressionism which tends to lose importance.
The unfamiliarity of expressionist painters with the brush is balanced, according Jolanda Covre Nigro, by tedensco close relationship with romance, and the heritage of philosophers from Kant to Hegel to Nietzsche.
Among the theoretical assumptions of Kantian and Hegelian origin are respectively sottlineate theory and the theory of pure visibility dell'immedesimazione, or empathy, or sympathy symbolic.
Pure Visibility is located in a faculty of knowledge of one's view, quite distinct from that which proceeds by rational concepts, but also from any emotional or religious factor. The artist continues the process of learning "by creating" images strictly two-dimensional (since it is the stand) with a structure tending to equilibrium, unit orderly harmony. The themes consist of expressionist figures, landscapes, groups of nudes, still lifes. Many are religious themes, and biblical Christians. The projection of the mood in the landscape and still life allows you to configure this theme as a whole as an analysis of the subject, its existential and psychological data.Expressionism was also identified as the most radical rupture with the movementof hedonistic conception of art, a prerequisite for any subsequent position culturally revolutionary for its spirit ribellistico, produced childlike discomfort later matured into rebellion and complaint; revolutionary as deliberately stated in terms of  absolute negativity and "aesthetic of the ugly". This would be the inconvenience, this at least in Germany, the German political and industrial expansion and launched toward the conquest of the primacy in foreign markets, where the artist appears as the product (reagents) and alienation of evil to live, unannounced the romantic type and later exploded nel'esistenzialismo.

Between the Imaginary and the Real: Photographic Portraits of Mourning and of Melancholia in Argentina

During Argentina's ‘Dirty War’ (1976-83), the military regime attempted to erase an entire population; today the photographs of the dead/missing stand in defiance, contradicting that attempted erasure of the desaparecidos.
In this essay, Julia Reineman explains the connection between photography and loss, and how photography fits within Lacan's understanding of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, the Real, and the ‘gaze’.
She discusses complicated mourning (circumstances which inhibit/delay mourning) and the difficulties created by political disappearances: as long as the family members maintain the belief that their loved one(s) might still be alive, they cannot begin the process of mourning the permanently lost object. Beginning with the Madres de Plaza de Mayo and, using the web-based art exhibits of Marcelo Brodsky and Inés Ulanovsky, she analyzes the role of the photograph in Argentina, how it serves as a linking object, how it is used to symbolize the dead/missing, and how it can function to facilitate mourning, or to serve as proof of pathological melancholia. She argues that such artistic representations of loss function to reinscribe healthy mourning rituals within the Argentine society.

Claude Monet: Virtual Narcissus

Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840. His mother was thirty-five years old and already the childless widow of a first husband at the time of Monet's birth. Her second husband, Monet's father, was then forty, and her only other child, Monet's only full sibling, a brother, was four. By the time Monet was five, he and his family had moved to the port town of Le Havre, where his father was in the business of provisioning France's commercial shipping fleet. It was there, in this town where the Seine River spills into the English Channel, that Monet's mother is said to have encouraged her son's early interest in art; and it was there that she died in 1857 when he was not yet seventeen years old but already within a year of establishing himself as a draftsman of some notoriety on the strength of caricatures of local personalities exhibited in the window of a framer's shop.1
By 1860 Monet had taken up painting, and in that year he found himself at the age of twenty with a new half-sister born to his sixty-year-old widowed father and his father's twenty-four-year-old mistress, a sibling who until 1974 was entirely unmentioned in the literature on the artist. Perhaps represented at her father's side staring out to sea in a painting of 1867, Monet's half-sister was legitimated in 1870 byway of his father's second marriage, a marriage that took place a mere three months before Monet's father's death and only four months after Monet's own first marriage had similarly legitimated his three-year-old son.
When Monet's father died in 1871 his son was in London, in flight from military service in the Franco-Prussian war, the war that claimed the life of one of Monet's closest friends, the painter Frédéric Bazille. Upon his return to France, Monet established himself and his family in the outer suburbs of Paris at Argenteuil, where his colleague Edouard Manet painted the artist and his family in their garden in 1874, and where Manet painted Monet at work on the Seine in his studio boat, in the company of his wife but turning away from her gaze to grasp the environing riverscape by the tip of his brush. Penniless by 1878, and forced to leave Argenteuil with a sick and pregnant wife for an apartment in Paris, Monet was apparently unable to provide all the necessities to the postpartum mother, who would be represented in his art one last time lying on her deathbed in the tiny Seine-side village of Vétheuil, dead of uterine cancer in 1879 at the age of thirty-two.

What the author sees in Monet's painting is not the Real trauma of the subject's desiring look, nor yet the Imaginary reflex of the mother's mirrored gaze, but precisely what Cézanne so notoriously described in Monet's art, that is, the Symbolic effect of the paternal positioning of the desiring and mirroring individual as nothing but the picture's tache or objectal stain. “Monet is only an eye; but good God what an eye!” (Shiff 1984, 280). Just what kind of an eye/I is this?
Seen with God's eye from the unseen angle of “pèrespective,” Monet's painting is “a self-portrait in which the subject will see himself as he cannot see himself, a vision of horror in which his own nullity appears to him” (Borch-Jacobsen 1991, 237). “This rapid painting, this portrait without gaze,… indifferent to all spirituality, even in a face” (Régamey 1927, 89; Levine 1994b, 283) bodies forth the opaque pigmented screen “by means of which we confront the utter nullity of our narcissistic pretentions” (Žižek 1991b, 64). In the congealed gestural traces of his Self-Portrait, Monet “makes visible for us here something that is simply the subject as annihilated” (Lacan 1978, 88-89).16 “This man was in reality … a daily tormented person, at the same time a solitary person with an idée fixe, racking his brains into exhaustion, forcing his will to the fixed and desired task, pursuing his dream of form and color almost unto the annihilation of his individuality in the eternal Nirvana of things at once changing and immutable” (Geffroy 1922, 335; Levine 1994b, 260). Here Monet's biographer unknowingly repeats Freud's contemporaneous postulation of a Nirvana principle as the self-voiding impetus of narcissism, a Real principle of repetition and discharge whereby the self is obscurely driven “beyond the pleasure principle” to abdicate its Imaginary erotic teleology in favor of a concentration and, ultimately, a Symbolic annihilation of all erotic investment within itself. “We have unwittingly steered our course into the harbour of Schopenhauer's philosophy. For him death is the ‘true result and to that extent the purpose of life’” (Freud 1920, 49-50). This from the Freud least amenable to the affirmations of ego psychology and most resigned to the negations of Lacan and, I believe, Monet as well. “The function of the work of art is to render the void sufferable” (Schneiderman 1990, 211).

Culture and Psychoanalysis

The concern with literature, the fine arts, film and more recently also music is an established part of psychoanalytic discourse. It builds on the great legacy that Freud left us in his writings on literature and art – to which film and music have been added in the last two decades.
By contrast, there is no established psychoanalytic tradition of reflecting on culture and socio-cultural processes of development and change, although Freud also left us some fundamental works on these themes. In his principal works on the psychoanalysis of culture, Totem and Taboo and Civilization and Its Discontents, he formulated some proposed answers to the questions of how culture emerges and develops, as well as the role of the individual in culture. He also examined the cultural institutions of art and religion, the latter in The Future of an Illusion and Moses and Monotheism.
Freud’s above-mentioned works on the psychoanalysis of culture have borne fruit in various ways in other scientific fields and these have proceeded to have an effect on psychoanalysis itself in turn. I should mention, for example, the cultural anthropology work carried out by René Girard, who, against the backdrop of Totem and Taboo, emphasizes sacrifice – among other things – as a key factor in the emergence of culture. Despite, or perhaps precisely because of these re-importations, the impression emerges that reflection on cultural questions outside the realm of art is a poor relation of psychoanalysis.
After Freud, psychoanalysis was constituted as clinical psychoanalysis. This raises the question as to whether the psychoanalysis of culture, understood as applied psychoanalysis, is peripheral and ultimately superfluous, while analysing films, literature and so on can still be understood as a form of stimulating exercise for clinical practice.
A specific depth perspective would be missing if any attempt were made to understand culture and society without psychoanalysis. On the other hand, psychoanalysis would remain blind and obtuse if it ceased to make its specific contribution to socio-cultural self-reflection, and did not allow itself to be critically and creatively stimulated in reflection on its practice and its models by the socio-cultural realm. Freud the clinical psychoanalyst would not have existed at all without the Freud who was deeply connected with culture and, conversely, Freud the psychoanalytic cultural theorist is indissociably connected with Freud the clinician.
